Kos is located in the south-eastern Aegean, between Kalymnos and Nisyros. It is 4 nautical miles far from the coast of Turkey and 200 nautical miles from Piraeus. Covering ​​290 km², it is the third largest island in the Dodecanese. Its shape is long and narrow and its highest mountain is mount Dikeo with an altitude of 846 metres at the south-east of the island. Kos Town is the capital of the island and there are seven more organized settlements.

  • In addition to this, many parts of the coastline have dunes and there are 10 wetlands that attract large migratory birds.
  • There is also a large number of hares living here, as well as rare insects such as the butterfly of Rhodes and Mediterranean monk seals approach the rocky shores.
